Fitkids is a training programme specifically developed for children and adolescents with a chronic illness or disability. Under the professional guidance of a paediatric physiotherapist, the children are offered a varied training programme in which enjoyment of movement is central. Training takes place in groups, working towards individual goals aimed at improving physical fitness and achieving positive behavioural change in relation to physical activity, sport, and exercise.

The ultimate aim is for these children to become more physically active in daily life, with a focus on progression into a mainstream or adapted sports club or physical activity, so that every child with a chronic illness, disability, or long-term condition can participate fully in an inclusive society.

Fitkids was launched in 2003 at a single location in Amsterdam in collaboration with the Sport Medical Centre Amsterdam. Thanks in part to the support of the Cruyff Foundation, Fitkids has since grown into a structured and recognised programme that is now delivered at more than 150 locations across the Netherlands.
