The Esther Vergeer Foundation is committed to helping children and youngsters with a physical disability or chronic condition participate in sport and physical activity on a regular basis. Sport is not an end in itself, but a powerful tool that enables children to discover what they can do rather than focusing on their limitations. Through sport, they develop confidence, enjoyment, independence and social connections, giving them the opportunity to participate fully both on and off the playing field.
Through Sports Clinics based in all academic children's hospitals and several rehabilitation centres across the Netherlands, hundreds of children and their families receive support each year in finding a suitable sport. Doctors and other healthcare professionals identify children who would like to take part in sport but are unsure what activities are appropriate or possible for them. Parents often have questions as well about safety, opportunities and suitable sports providers.
Through a personalised support programme, the Esther Vergeer Foundation's Child & Sport Relationship Managers guide children and their families through every step of the journey towards finding the right sport. They combine medical knowledge, sporting expertise and a strong network of sports providers to ensure that every child can find a place where they can participate with confidence and enjoyment. The focus is not only on taking part in sport, but also on helping children grow in confidence, independence and social connections.
The Johan Cruyff Foundation and the Esther Vergeer Foundation share the belief that every child should have the opportunity to experience the positive power of sport. Thanks to the support of the Johan Cruyff Foundation, around 50 children were guided towards a suitable and sustainable sporting opportunity over the past year. In addition, both organisations work together on events and activities, such as the Johan Cruyff Foundation Open Day at the Olympic Stadium, to make sport more visible and accessible for children with special needs.
