Last Thursday, 330 students from special education schools in Groningen and Drenthe took part in the Survival Experience Run. At the Hommes Outdoor survival course in Groningen, the students tackled the route in small groups, taking on various obstacles and survival activities along the way.

Climbing and scrambling
The students, from eight different schools, completed a route of around four kilometres on and around the Zernike survival course. Along the way, they took on a range of challenges, from swinging across on hanging ropes and climbing over wooden beams to tackling the obstacle course.
It wasn’t about being the fastest. The students could take on the obstacles in their own way and help each other when needed. Skipping an obstacle or taking a short break was also possible, making sure everyone could take part in a way that suited them.

The students were accompanied by teachers from their own schools and students from the Physical Education programme at Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen. They supported the students where needed and made sure everyone could complete the route at their own pace.
Sport for everyone
The day gave the students the opportunity to try different ways of being active in an accessible way and enjoy being active together. Afterwards, there was time for free play and the students could roast marshmallows around the campfire.
It was a day full of activity, teamwork and fun.
